Introduction to Laboratory Health and Safety-Session II

Medical products control laboratories play a vital role in the quality control/assessment of pharmaceuticals, biological products, and medical devices. However, laboratories have a variety of safety and health hazards. This makes the management of safety and health-related issues in the laboratory an essential part of an effective quality management system. These hazards could be physical or chemical, and they include fire, explosion, and reactivity with other substances. Hazards become realities when a chemical is used or stored improperly, exposing it to circumstances that could cause it to burn or explode.

Thus, laboratory staff need to understand the hazards associated with laboratory processes and take proper precautions to protect themselves and co-workers and act effectively in an emergency. The primary aim of this training course is to enlighten officers responsible for laboratory waste and safety, laboratory managers, supervisors, analysts, and chemical reagents storage officers   about safe work practices and international standard requirements associated with laboratory operations (such as WHO guidance, OSHA General Duty Clause, 29 CFR 1910.132 & 133, 1910.1030, 1910.1200, etc.) to increase and enhance safety awareness in the laboratories.
